Today’s reflection post is going to be about the simple pleasures in life.
So often we want extravagance; we want new things, a dazzling experience or opportunity. Not that I am saying these things are bad, but sometimes we want to go for the great and glam, that we miss the simple everyday pleasures of life.
This is one of the reasons I decided to start a rose and vegetable garden. Instead of having the fading pleasures of buying new clothes, movies, accessories, etc. I can enjoy the growth of my roses and all the blooms that they have. Also, the roses renew themselves, so they will always have blooms, where else new clothes do become old, or our taste for clothes, accessories, gadgets, change.
So how can we more appreciate the simple pleasures of life, the plants, the environment, the rustle of the leaves, the chirping of the birds, in this era of commercialism?
Here are some thoughts that I have come up with myself in thinking about this issue.
- Put your heart into something that renews itself, that is that doesn’t get old, such as gardening, taking pictures, or just enjoying the stillness of nature.
- make it a habit of renewing the old-fashioned ways taking a nice quiet walk. Have a nice social with friends, where the TV is turned off. If any of your friends are talented a playing a instrument, let them play that evening, enjoying the simple pleasure of music and friends.
- Take the time to be with your family; to reflect on the important things in life. So often we are so busy in the busyness of life that we neglect the smaller yet more enriching part of life, such as spending time with family and friends. We cannot have life without either.
Alright, that is my reflection for this week. Let me know in the comments what your simple pleasures are. Mine are writing in my journal after a long day, seeing my family after I get home from work, and getting lost in a very good book.
See you soon,
Alyssa
